United Glasgow 5-1 Hotscots
The UGFC Men’s Development Team travelled to Edinburgh on March 26th for a return game against Hotscots who they faced during the Football V Homophobia month of action, losing 4-0 at Glasgow Green. Both teams had significantly different teams out this time, with United’s team in the first leg being the first time many of the player had pulled on the black jersey or met each other.
United started the match with Antoine, our French goalkeeper, at centre back alongside Alan but with elusive Saturday Team striker Sean starting up front alongside Omar.
The game started brightly with both teams taking pot-shots from difference while the players avoided the bumps and holes in the pitch (some of the UGFC players said afterwards that it was the first time they’d ever played on a grass park!). United took the lead soon when a corner wasn’t cleared by Hotscots and Omar was on hand to lash the ball home. A few minutes later, Omar was sent through on goal and the team howled for him to use his right foot. Omar calmly cut back onto his left foot and rocketed the ball into the net. Omar knows best!
Hotscots pulled a goal back before halftime as the tallest player on the Hotscots team went horizontal awfully quickly when he made contact with Alan’s knee in the box. Definite foul, impressive agility…
The rest of the first half was unremarkable other than an outrageous piece of skill from Mubarak which was gleefully caught on camera by Paul Georgie. We’ll just ignore the wayward pass immediately afterwards…!
In the second half, Hotscots attempted to up the pressure but United started to turn the screw. While the first half might have been all Omar, Sean showed his stuff in the second half! His first came from a shot from Abdullah which was pulling well wide until Sean passed it into the net from six yards out and his second was from the same range but from a rebound from a penalty the Mubarak missed (the Hotscots keeper saved it but it wasn’t too difficult for him!) Sean capped his hat-trick with a lob over the advancing goalkeeper after a through ball from auxiliary centre back Paul Georgie, who sprinted 40 yard to celebrate (although, that might have had something to do with the amount of caffeine he drank…!).
Overall, a thoroughly good performance from the UGFC men’s development team that should stand them in good stead for their games remaining this season, starting with Odd Woodland in the Challenge Shield on Sunday!
