Good things come to those who wait...

United 3-0 Greenfield Athletic

In the glorious sunshine at Springburn Park on May 15th, the UGFC Men's Development Team's long, long (LONG!) wait for a competitive point came to an end in dramatic circumstances!

Coming into this game with a goal difference over -122, the Development Team were clear underdogs but there's obviously something underdogish about 2016 in football as the team put on their best Leicester City impression to take all three points!

Withstanding heavy Greenfield pressure in the early stages, Sandeep and Andrew were solid in the centre of defence, giving the Greenfield strikers not a moments peace in and around the box. When the defence was breached, United's French 'keeper pulled off save after save to keep the score at 0-0. With only a few minutes remaining of the first half, the ball was played 80 yards from a free kick to Filimon who brought it down in the box and finished with aplomb!

1-0 at half time and the message was more of the same, press the ball, give no peace and hit on the counter attack. Wave after wave of Greenfield pressure came to nothing and United continued to exploit the pace of Omar, Ahmed and Filimon on the break. Not too long into the second half and Ahmed doubled United's lead with a fantastic strike into the top corner, resulting in pandemonium on the sidelines and on the park. Allan Irvine's legs started shaking on the touchline and Sandeep ran 50 yards to congratulate Ahmed, could this be United's day?!

Not content with one goal, Ahmed doubled his tally soon after leading to disbelief from the Greenfield players, one of whom sunk to his knees in exasperation as United's players celebrated wildly.

Goodbye to the beard!

Goodbye to the beard!

United rode out the last 20 minutes with blocks, saves and close calls but they kept that elusive clean sheet which means we'll be saying goodbye to Sandeep's beard and the team will be looking forward to trying to take a few more points before the season ends now!

As the referee said after the game, "that's what happens when you believe". If Leicester can do it... Bring on season 2016/17!
