United Glasgow FC's men's development team started their Show Racism the Red Card League Cup campaign at Nethercraigs against FC Southside United yesterday. After a long, tough season last year where only 3 points were collected over the course of the full season, the team were hoping for a better start to the season this year.
The team started brightly and raced into a one - nil lead when Southside gave away a free kick (the first of many the referee gave...) and Kieran stepped up. Despite a deflectio, the ball squirmed past the goalkeeper into the back of the net. Not long after, United raced further ahead when Nasser's strike from the edge of the box escaped the keeper, prompting one of the UGFC players to question "is this actually happening?"
Southside hit back with a goal from their man mountain number 18 who was inexplicably left unmarked at a penalty. However, United went into halftime 3-1 up as Nasser raced free and finished with his left foot this time. United looked a little more disjointed in the second half as Southside fought their way back to 3-3 with a fantastic free kick and a rather spectacular own goal from Abdulmajet. Then, with ten minutes to go, the unthinkable happened as Southside grabbed a 4th with a smart finish.
Heads didnt go down and while chances from Teklit and Ibrahim went begging, when Ben played a great through ball to Nasser there was only one outcome as he grabbed his third and a point for United.
