United 5-4 Glasgow on the Ball
It's only 2 games into the 2016/17 season and UGFC's men's development team have already won more points than all of 2015/16!
After last weekend's encouraging 4-4 draw with Southside United, the development team went into their next Show Racism the Red Card League Cup match with real confidence. A fairly similar starting 11 took to the field to play Glasgow on the Ball at Springburn Park and they were soon rewarded as last week's hero Nasser was released behind the defence and he smashed it into the roof of the net for 1-0. most of the play was in the GOTB half and United were disappointed when a cross-come-shot eluded Steph to draw it level at 1-1 with 10 minutes to go to half-time. However, not disheartened, United kept pressing forward and were soon rewarded as Teklit's low drive squirmed under the goalkeeper.
United refuelled at half-time and made some changes but soon found themselves back on terms when GOTB ploughed straight through the middle of the United team and smashed past Steph. As the teams went to restart the United right back remarked "well, time to get a third".
He wouldnt have to wait long, minutes later Nasser set to shoot in the penalty box and was unceremoniously bundled over from behind. Abdulmajet strolled forward to convert the penalty and make it 3-2. United built on their third as variations of Taha, Teklit, Jemal, Rediet and Abdulla made life a misery for the GOTB defence. Jemal, on as a sub at half time, scored twice in quick succession - once from an exquisite cross from Teklit.
At 5-2 up, UGFC lost their cool a little and started to falter, conceding two poor goals to give GOTB a sniff of a point. However, a well marshalled back line and a few crucial touches from Steph held the game at 5-4 until the full time whistle.
