Goals galore at Scotstoun for UGFC Women's Team

United 16 - 0 St Roch's

It was a day of firsts on Sunday as the UGFC kicked off in their first home league game of the season. After a win in Stranraer on the opening day of the season and two friendly wins before that, United were looking to keep the momentum going and really get the season off to a flying start. With a strong squad hopes were high in the UGFC camp as the players took to the field but not even the most optimistic of supporters could have predicted what was to come over the next 90 minutes!

The afternoon got off to a flying start when Emma put the home team up after just a couple of minutes, winning the ball on the edge of the box before driving forward, taking the ball round the keeper and coolly finishing low into the back of the net. United dominated the early periods and were rewarded when the lead was doubled on nine minutes. It was Emma again as she picked up the ball at the edge of the box and looped her shot over the keeper.

The goals didn’t stop as the team in black played the majority of the first quarter of the game in the opposition half. The third goal may have been from a different source but Emma would again prove the architect playing the ball through for Sian to expertly finish low to the keeper’s right, registering her first competitive goal of the season in the process.

Lou would get the fifth from the penalty spot after Sian was fouled at the edge of the box and Sian dusted herself down to add to her tally five minutes later having been played through by Megan.

With just over half an hour gone Emma would complete her hat trick having
created and finished the chance on her own.

The increasingly excited United supporters wouldn’t have to wait long for their team to make it seven and this time it was Sian who would complete her hat-trick finishing off a through ball from Emma with aplomb.

Yet the scoring for the half was still not finished. Sian turned scorer again, grabbing her fourth with a tap in following a great save from an Emma shot. So, at half-time it was 8-0 to the home side!

There was a change of shape at half time and to subs with Flo and Robyn being replaced by Arlene and Steph O’Neill. The team changed to a 4-4-2 to get two strikers on the pitch and it didn’t take long for the side to adjust.

With just a minute of the second half gone it was the two substitutes who combined to extend the lead. Some excellent midfield play from Arlene played Steph O’Neill down the right wing. The striker then crossed the ball for Arlene to smash home.

Another first wasn’t far away as the Womens team would write themselves into the history books as they became the first ever United team to score double figures and they did it in spectacular fashion. Sian acted quickly to play a short corner to Emma who took one touch before rifling across goal into the top right hand corner.

Caitlin and Nadine would both come on for the final half an hour, replacing Megan and Sian respectively, allowing Arlene to move to her preferred position up front.

A true footballing rarity would see United hit 11 as a pass back was penalised resulting in an indirect free kick from 10 yards out. Arlene laid the ball off and Steph rifled the ball into the roof of the net.

As the game entered the final stages there was no sign of United easing up with goals 12 and 13 coming in quick succession, the first an Emma shot from the edge of the box, the second a Lou header from an Emma corner.

Late in the game, the players may have been forgiven for taking their foot off the gas and enjoying a well-earned victory but that wasn’t even a consideration here. Caitlin, who impressed after coming on made good headway into the opposition box and played an excellent ball inside for Arlene. Arlene moved wide of the box before firing a cross in
front of the keeper for Steph to slot home from close range.

With just a couple of minutes left Emma would complete a truly remarkable afternoon by recording the first ever double hat trick for a United player with an excellent finish from inside the area.

Steph would complete her own hat trick and finish the scoring as the seconds ticked away with Emma again proving the architect with a brilliantly weighted through ball for 16-0.
