UGFC Men's Development 0-7 Clutha Trust
UGFC Men's Development Team took on Clutha Trust at Springburn Park in the first GCCL League fixtures of 2016. Eager to erase the memories of last week's Football v Homophobia Cup hammering in Clydebank, they started the game brightly here but clean sheets are rare for the Development side and their resistance was eventually broken after 25 minutes.
Another two Clutha shots found the United net in the first period, none you would take any joy from scoring. A special mention must be made for Andrew's magnificent last-man challenge - the highlight of his impressive debut in United's defence. Mubarak, twice, Rabbi and Anwar all went close to replying for United. UGFC's attacking quartet looked dangerous and only a fingertip save denied Rabbi his first Development Team goal...
The wonderful attacking move was started by Euan in midfield. Incisive interplay between Allan, Anwar and Rabbi saw the latter release Joe on the right hand side. As Rabbi continued his run into the box, Joe's cross was right on the money and only the Clutha keeper's sprawling save stopped the Ghanian's header crossing the line. The United sidelines were poised to invade for a pile-on celebration had the thrilling move been converted. It's clear goals mean so much more to United's Development Team than to most others in the league!
Clutha came out strong in the second half and added a few more goals before the hour mark.
Undeterred, United kept searching for the goal their efforts deserved. Two efforts from Filimon both forced saves from the Clutha keeper. Another United effort was scrambled off the line and Allan had a golden chance to score his second goal in two games, played through by Michael, but shot straight at the advancing goalkeeper. He won't sleep tonight thinking about that one, he says.
Clutha added a couple late goals to their tally as United visibly tired towards the end however the opposition's tally is rarely regarded as paramount importance.
Hard luck for United. The zero beside their name is not reflective of their efforts during this match.
Whilst overturning their astronomic negative goal difference before the season's end already looks a foregone task, attaining their first points of the season certainly looks achievable should they replicate their efforts displayed here!
